Seymour, P. H. K.; Moir, W. L. N. – British Journal of Psychology, 1980
An information-processing analysis of intelligence proposed by Eysenck and Furneaux was examined in an experimental study of semantic categorization and free recall by 11-year-old children of varying intelligence. Results, and implications of the results, are discussed. (Author/KC)
Descriptors: Children, Cognitive Processes, Componential Analysis, Intelligence

Folkard, Simon – British Journal of Psychology, 1980
This brief research note suggests that while further research on the topic is needed, it would appear that the current practice of teaching most academic material in the morning may be ill-founded. (KC)
Descriptors: Learning, Learning Theories, Memory, Recall (Psychology)

Hockey, Robert – British Journal of Psychology, 1978
The author indicates a number of methodological differences between his experiments and the unsuccessful replication by Forster and Grierson. He also suggests that these problems are complicated by an unnecessarily narrow interpretation of the attentional selectivity hypothesis. Forster and Grierson's study and rejoinder appear in this journal…

Hartley, James; Rooum, Donald – British Journal of Psychology, 1983
Examines Burt's contributions to typographical research on spacing words and texts; use of serifs, and the effects of typefaces, typesizes, and line-length on reading comprehension. In spite of Hearnshaw's (1979) favorable assessment and the wisdom of Burt's sentiments, many of his conclusions were not supported by data. (JAC)
Descriptors: Accountability, Foreign Countries, Literature Reviews, Opinion Papers

Marsh, R. W. – British Journal of Psychology, 1980
This paper presents further evidence to demonstrate the existence of intra-uterine effects within the normal range of intelligence. The argument is then extended further to estimate the effects of organic factors in the environment that are also pathogenic for intelligence. Various implications of these factors are discussed. (Author/KC)
Descriptors: Biological Influences, Birth, Body Weight, Cultural Influences

Cowan, Richard – British Journal of Psychology, 1979
Five-year-olds were found to give more conserving responses to small number versions than to a large number version of a test of identity conservation. Superiority of performance with small number versions was reduced but not eliminated when the opportunity to requantify was removed. (Author/SJL)
Descriptors: Concept Formation, Conservation (Concept), Developmental Psychology, Kindergarten Children

Johoda, Gustav – British Journal of Psychology, 1980
A 3D mental rotation task was used to measure spatial performance in boys and girls in Ghana and Scotland. Sex differences of equal magnitude appeared in both cultures. In light of these findings, the author discusses genetic and environmental theories of spatial ability and the problems in testing such skills. (SJL)
Descriptors: Adolescents, Cross Cultural Studies, Cultural Influences, Nature Nurture Controversy

Wheldall, Kevin; Poborca, Barbara – British Journal of Psychology, 1980
A nonverbal paradigm for assessing conservation based on an operant discrimination learning procedure is described. Initial results suggest that young children who could not conserve within the traditional verbal procedure were more likely to demonstrate conservation within the nonverbal paradigm and that traditional Piagetian tasks are verbally…
Descriptors: Conservation (Concept), Discrimination Learning, Educational Assessment, Language Acquisition

Stanley, Gordon; And Others – British Journal of Psychology, 1983
Compared the efficiency of eye-movements of dyslexic children (N=15) while tracking sequential lights. Contrary to Pavlidis (1981) no significant differences were found. In a reply, Pavlidis pointed out methodological differences between the studies. Further comments by the first authors discussed procedures, subject selection, and data analysis.…
