Teaching Negotiation in Lithuania
Groth, Brian Ibbotson
Business Communication Quarterly, v70 n2 p205-210 2007
In this article, the author describes his experiences and the lessons he learned from a 2-week stint teaching negotiation in Lithuania. He learned that for anyone older than about 25, and that constituted most of the class, being part of the Soviet Union for more than half a century seems to have left deep wounds that have not yet healed. Lithuania is still seeking to establish its place in the world as an independent nation. Also he learned that for some female students at least, there is still a deference toward male counterparts, a deference not seen in the Scandinavian countries, for example. Finally, he learned that many young Lithuanian business people, mostly men, still think distributive negotiation, win-lose, is what business negotiation is all about, and that integrative win-win negotiation might be all right in classroom cases but won't work in the "real world."
