The brief history of the American Association for the Advancement of the Humanities, a general membership organization for people from all fields, types of work, and institutions related to the humanities, is chronicled, and the conditions and factors affecting its successes and failures are discussed. Reed College, a small, liberal arts college with high academic distinction, is described. Faculty participate in virtually all policy decisions and are hired and promoted according to the quality of their teaching. Its finances are improved, but it is still underfinanced and too heavily dependent on tuition income. (MLW)

Discussed is the difficulty encountered in teaching humanities to underprepared students at Florida A & M University, where 90 percent of the students are in the special admissions category that permits enrollment of students who score below the entrance requirement.
