Since 1972, the Nixon and Ford administrations have sought to terminate two major "campus-based" student aid programs (Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants and National Direct Student Loans), and to reduce funding of a third, College Work-Study. The policy has been renounced by both Congress and the academic community. (LBH)

At Berea College all students work 10 to 20 hours a week on campus in a compulsory labor program and pay no tuition. The college maintains high academic standards, and students often use their work experience in later employment. (MSE)

Many colleges offer creative programs to help students earn money to pay college costs. Many colleges have increased the grant aid but on most campuses, the major available alternative is employment opportunities. Colleges will have to look mostly to themselves in the future when dealing with student loans. (MLW)
