Americans Split on Requiring Students to Study More Science

This article reports the split of Americans on requiring students to take more courses in math and science. In a survey findings released by the American Council on Education, Americans are divided about whether college students need to study more mathematics and science to preserve America's global economic competitiveness. According to David Ward, the council's president and a former member of the federal Commission on the Future of Higher Education, the results suggest that colleges and the council need to do a better job of persuading students to take such courses and to disseminate successful teaching methods. The poll results, however, suggest that the idea might be a hard sell: Forty-six percent of respondents said they believed colleges and universities should not require students to take more courses in math and science, while 46 percent said students should be required to do so.
