Mike Frank G. Epitropoulos moved to Greece in the summer of 2005 to become chairman of the business and applied-sociology departments on a small branch campus of the University of Indianapolis, in the shadow of the Acropolis. A former sociology professor at the University of Pittsburgh, he had long wanted to live with his wife and two sons in the country where his parents grew up, and he was thrilled that he had been able to find a job with a reputable American university. His enthusiasm was short-lived. Within six months he had quit, appalled by what he says was a lack of professionalism among administrators and breakdowns in academic integrity at the 479-student campus. This article discusses issues that the professor has faced wherein he was never party to any substantive discussions of curriculum or academic standards with administrators on the main campus in Indianapolis. Here, Mr. Epitropoulos and several other current and former faculty and staff members and students from the campus in Athens describe a fiefdom in which a domineering chancellor and his top associates have compromised academic and ethical standards in pursuit of tuition dollars.
