The Myth of the College as a Democracy
Riley, Naomi Schaefer
Chronicle of Higher Education, v53 n23 pB16 Feb 2007
College campuses provide lots of institutions that look like those one finds in a democratic society--newspapers, government, courts--but ultimately the campus versions are not the same. When anybody sign up for college, he/she is volunteering (and paying) to be part of a particular community with particular rules. This article discusses the practices of colleges that deprived the democratic rights of students and the importance of choosing the right institution for students. Therefore, students should follow the advice of consumer advocates and relationship counselors when it comes to picking a college. Read about the product before rendering money on it.
