Social Identity Pathways to College Choice and Attitudes toward Help-Seeking among Black Students at a Minority Serving Institution

College Student Journal, v53 n1 p113-129 Mar 2019
Using path analyses, we tested a model of psychosocial factors that contribute to both college selection and attitudes toward help-seeking among minority college students at a Minority Serving Institution. We theorized that more frequent past experiences of discrimination, intergroup anxiety, and greater concerns of ongoing race-based rejection contribute to minority students' preference for institutional diversity in their college selections. Thus, students who have experienced frequent threats may seek out "identity safe" college spaces. Further, the findings also highlight that institutional identification may help to mitigate help-seeking stigma among students and promote more positive help-seeking attitudes. Findings from a cross-sectional survey study support our theoretical model. Together, these findings highlight an important set of pathways for how institutions might understand the needs of students.
