Addressing HIV Stigma in the Classroom: Impact and Evaluation
Lisa K. Paler
College Student Journal, v50 n1 p5-18 2016
This article describes use of an exercise and reflective assignment used within a Psychology of Women course where students identified their prejudices and evaluated their beliefs toward this stigmatized group of women. Creating awareness about personal attitudes and developing an empathic connection to women with HIV may reduce the stigma associated with HIV infection (Herek, 2002). A mixed method approach was used to assess the impact of the exercise and reading assigned. While quantitative analysis did not indicate a significant change in attitude toward this population of women, qualitative analysis of student reflection papers indicated students have far more nuanced perspectives toward women living with HIV. Using the exercise, students were not only able to make personal connections with women living with HIV but also critically evaluate their beliefs.
