Motivating college students is challenging. Professors must be energetic, enthusiastic, and current in their field. Typically, once a college student selects a major, the motivation to be successful within that discipline is more intrinsic based on interest associated with the major. However, undecided majors who are enrolled in baccalaureate level undergraduate work can be more exigent. As a professor, the author has used collaborative activities, field trips, guest speakers from various professions, and upperclassmen commentary to help ignite a passion for life-long learning in her students. But it was when she introduced Randy Pausch's "The Last Lecture" as required reading that she began to see students truly make a connection between their college lives and the rest of their lives. Through Pausch's memoir, these college students begin to recognize their own social consciousness and become motivated academics, starting to make the connection between the value of a college education and the attainment of lifelong dreams.
