Broadus, Robert N. – College and Research Libraries, 1985
Discusses general findings reported in the literature of use and citation studies on the use of citation counts as found in "Journal Citation Reports" for identification of periodical titles for cancellation in a university library. Principal reasons for retention of little-cited journals are noted. Twenty-one references are cited. (EJS)

Ciliberti, Anne C.; And Others – College and Research Libraries, 1987
Describes a study that used the shelf availability research methodology to identify and quantify the causes of users' failures to identify and locate library materials. The factors resulting in unsuccessful searches are discussed, and recommendations for reducing these factors are made. (26 references) (CLB)

Alzofon, Sammy R.; Van Pulis, Noelle – College and Research Libraries, 1984
A survey of 430 users of online catalog at Ohio State University Libraries found that most users are undergraduate students (68 percent) and that majority (95 percent) choose online catalog as first source of information. Fewer performed known-item searches and success rates were generally higher than reported in earlier studies. (8 references)…

Nolan, Christopher W. – College and Research Libraries, 1991
Discusses references collections in academic libraries and offers guidelines for placing materials in a reference collection that focus on their suitability for true reference functions and the expected frequency of use. Problems with poorly managed collections are discussed, and the importance of selection policies and weeding are emphasized. (37…

Bensman, Stephen J. – College and Research Libraries, 1985
Establishes theoretical framework for solution of problem confronting academic libraries--growth in number of journals and surge in prices--by showing how concentration of usage is function of sociobibliometric laws based on cumulative advantage principle. Use of citation indexes in academic evaluation and library collection development is…

Hanson, Elizabeth; Serebnick, Judith – College and Research Libraries, 1986
Presents a methodology for describing, analyzing, and evaluating the public service functions of serial file systems, and describes a user study conducted in a university departmental library to determine the efficiency and effectiveness of its system in enabling students new to the library to locate known-items in the serials collection. (CDD)

Getz, Malcolm – College and Research Libraries, 1987
Reports measures of the gains in search time and likelihood of success in known-item searches with the Acorn automated catalog at Vanderbilt University. User time and search success are valued in dollar terms to make the measures meaningful for system design choices. (Author/CLB)
