Not Quite Freshmen; Not Really Transfers: Understanding and Assisting Early College and High School Dual Enrollment Students
Ashley E. Shivar
College and University, v99 n4 p79-90 2024
High school dual-enrollment and early college models are seeing a surge in popularity, though neither is new. Both early college and dual-enrollment programs were designed to speed up the pathway to any postsecondary education while also saving students money. Previous literature does not argue that early college and high school dual-enrollment models assist in bridging access gaps for students who would be less likely to continue past high school into postsecondary education. In fact, most researchers agree that the early college model assists in pushing students who would not normally graduate high school to complete at least their high school diploma. The success of these programs to increase high school graduation rates or college-going behavior is not in question. However, much less research has been conducted on what happens once those early college and high school dual-enrollment students transfer. This research was prompted as questions from North Carolina community college and university staff about the readiness of early college students were raised and met with little-to-no feedback. As such, in Fall 2023, early college and dual enrollment students at East Carolina University were surveyed to gauge if any barriers were occurring for these populations.
