Online Treasures: No Rest for the Weary, or, a Systems Administrator's Work is Never Done
Balas, Janet L.
Computers in Libraries, v26 n1 p17-19 Jan 2006
It is easy for a library systems administrator to sometimes feel quite overwhelmed by the responsibilities of the job. Keeping a network running smoothly is a challenge in itself, but they must also be concerned with protecting the network from the many threats that exist. Constant vigilance is necessary to guard against electronic attacks including worms, Trojan horses, viruses, spyware, denial-of-service attacks, and any other electronic nastiness that can be unleashed. But even such careful vigilance is not enough, because the physical components of the network can also be at risk. Sysadmins must protect their libraries' data by securing the network and planning for data restoration after a natural disaster. This article discusses online resources that are available both for planning and, when needed, for recovery efforts.
