Gear Up Your Research Guides with the Emerging OPML Codes
Wilcox, Kimberley
Computers in Libraries, v26 n10 p6-8, 46, 48 Nov-Dec 2006
Outline Processor Markup Language (OPML) is an emerging format that allows for the creation of customized research packages to push to patrons. It is a way to gather collections of Web resources (links, RSS feeds, multimedia files), organize them as outlines, and publish them in a format that others can share and even subscribe to. In this article, the author discusses the strengths and limitations of the OPML format and explains how it can help people create and share dynamic outlines. The author walks the reader through the creation of their first OPML file and offers suggestions on creating and sharing reading lists, research and information guides, and outlines. OPML browser widgets, like Grazr, Bitty Browser, and the Optimal Browser are described as easy-to-use tools that one can employ to display OPML files on library Web sites. (Contains 3 figures.)
