Block, David – Creative Computing, 1982
Two kinds of secret writing, codes and ciphers, are discussed. The weakness of a ciphering system mentioned in the March 1981 issue is pointed out, and an alternate method is presented. Programs written in BASIC are presented which can be used to encipher messages and help break ciphers. (MP)

Leal, Antonio – Creative Computing, 1981
Some of the important concepts in recursive programing are detailed, along with how they can be used. Examples are provided to show how to program recursively in BASIC. (MP)

Sipser, Kenneth; Sipser, Michael – Creative Computing, 1980
This article gives an overview of the new field of complexity theory which links computer science to mathematics, and ultimately to the solution of theoretical as well as practical problems in society and technology. (Author/MK)

Barron, Jonathan C. – Creative Computing, 1981
A mathematical technique for solving for the interest rate of a given annuity is explained. The technique is applied to a BASIC program that finds interest rate given the future value, number of payments, and the value of the payment. (MP)

Shooman, Andrew – Creative Computing, 1982
A program written for the 16K Level II TRS-80 computer that prints a star map, using various mathematical formulas to compute positions of the stars and the moon and displays them on terminals, is discussed. Some relevant astronomical background and terminology are covered in order to aid understanding. (MP)

Whaland, Norman – Creative Computing, 1981
The current status of creating artificial intelligence (AI) in computers is viewed in terms of what has been accomplished, what the current limitations are, and how vague the concept of intelligent behavior is in today's world. Progress is expected to accelerate once sufficient fundamental knowledge is available. (MP)

Grier, James W. – Creative Computing, 1980
The development of a mathematics model to simulate small animal populations is described. Assumptions of the population model and options in the program are discussed. (MK)

Piele, Donald T. – Creative Computing, 1981
A series of lessons designed to promote problem-solving skills by encouraging students to write programs is presented. All samples of solutions are written in BASIC. (MP)

Lawler, Robert – Creative Computing, 1982
Some aspects of use of the LOGO programing language are discussed. The ideas focus on the creation of geometric patterns, particularly as viewed from the perspective of a beginner with this language. The material is designed to stimulate individual experimentation and exploration. (MP)
