The "New York Times" Looks at One Block in Harlem: Narratives of Race in Journalism.
Parisi, Peter
Critical Studies in Mass Communication, v15 n3 p236-54 Sep 1998
Contributes to scholarship on journalistic narrative method, socially responsible journalism, and journalism education by examining a three-part series in the "New York Times" portraying life on a single block in Harlem. Finds that the systematic use of personalization reproduced stereotypes and suppressed evidence that would counter stereotypes. Argues for increased editorial appreciation of the underlying narrative and ideological frames. (SR)
