Armitage, Kristy L.; Suddendorf, Thomas; Bulley, Adam; Bastos, Amalia P. M.; Taylor, Alex H.; Redshaw, Jonathan – Developmental Psychology, 2023
A cardinal feature of adult cognition is the awareness of our own cognitive struggles and the capacity to draw upon this awareness to offload internal demand into the environment. In this preregistered study conducted in Australia, we investigated whether 3-8-year-olds (N = 72, 36 male, 36 female, mostly White) could self-initiate such an external…

Andersen, Lau M.; Visser, Ingmar; Crone, Eveline A.; Koolschijn, P. Cédric M. P.; Raijmakers, Maartje E. J. – Developmental Psychology, 2014
Developmental differences in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and superior parietal cortex (SPC) activation are associated with differences in how children, adolescents, and adults learn from performance feedback in rule-learning tasks (Crone, Zanolie, Leijenhorst, Westenberg, & Rombouts, 2008). Both…

Ang, Su Yin; Lee, Kerry – Developmental Psychology, 2010
Although visuospatial short-term memory tasks have been found to engage more executive resources than do their phonological counterparts, it remains unclear whether this is due to intrinsic differences between the tasks or differences in participants' experience with them. The authors found 11-year-olds' performances on both visual short-term and…

Thompson, Doreen E.; Russell, James – Developmental Psychology, 2004
Although observational learning by children may occur through imitating a modeler's actions, it can also occur through learning about an object's dynamic affordances- a process that M. Tomasello (1996) calls "emulation." The relative contributions of imitation and emulation within observational learning were examined in a study with 14- to…

Cimpian, Andrei; Markman, Ellen M. – Developmental Psychology, 2005
There is debate about whether preschool-age children interpret words as referring to kinds or to classes defined by shape similarity. The authors argue that the shape bias reported in previous studies is a task-induced artifact rather than a genuine word-learning strategy. In particular, children were forced to extend an object's novel label to…

Bray, Norman W.; And Others – Developmental Psychology, 1985
Use of strategies to eliminate interference from irrelevant information in memory was investigated for 11-, 15-, and 18-year-olds. A directed forgetting paradigm was introduced. Results suggest that 11-year-olds use adequate selective remembering strategy, but not selective rehearsal: most 15- and 18-year-olds did. (Author/DST)

Nuerk, Hans-Christoph; Kaufmann, Liane; Zoppoth, Sabine; Willmes, Klaus – Developmental Psychology, 2004
Magnitude is assumed to be represented along a holistic mental number line in adults. However, the authors recently observed a unit-decade compatibility effect for 2-digit numbers that is inconsistent with this "holisticness" assumption (H.-C. Nuerk, U. Weger, & K. Willmes, 2001). This study used the compatibility effect to examine whether the…
