What Works Clearinghouse Rating
Reynolds, Cecil R. – Diagnostique, 1991
This article defines test bias and reviews research methods most aptly applied postpublication to educational and psychological tests. Best methods for estimating bias in criterion-related or predictive validity and determining bias in construct validity across groups are explained. (Author/JDD)

Vance, Booney; Sabatino, David – Diagnostique, 1991
The issues of construct validity, predictive validity, and item content bias on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R) are examined. The review concludes that most objective data have not supported the issue of bias of the WISC-R when used with children of different ethnic backgrounds. (JDD)

Dunn, Caroline; And Others – Diagnostique, 1992
Fifty-seven primary-level students completed the Detroit Tests of Learning Aptitude-Primary: Second Edition (DTLA-P:2) and the Woodcock-Johnson Psycho-Educational Battery, Part I and II. A strong relationship between the two provides evidence for the criterion-related and construct validity of the DTLA-P:2 test scores. (Author/JDD)

Overton, Terry; Apperson, Jennifer – Diagnostique, 1989
The Cognitive Levels Test (CLT) and the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised (PPVT-R) were administered to 30 freshman college students at a small state college in the mid-Atlantic region. Significant correlations indicate that the PPVT-R measures a component of the CLT. Mean PPVT-R scores were significantly higher than CLT means. (Author/PB)

Snyder, Scott; Sheehan, Robert – Diagnostique, 1992
Rasch calibration procedures were applied to item-response data for the 1,262 infants and toddlers comprising the standardization sample for the Mental Scale of the Bayley Scales of Infant Development. Analyses tend to confirm the psychometric integrity of the instrument. (Author)

Bain, Sherry K.; Garlock, Jane W. – Diagnostique, 1992
This study established criterion-related validity for the Reading Passages Subtest of a locally developed curriculum-based measurement (CBM) instrument, with cross-validation across reading curricula and criterion measures. Correlations of 479 primary grade students' reading scores on the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills provided support for CBM…

Jenkins, Joseph R.; Jewell, Mark – Diagnostique, 1992
A total of 413 students in grades 1-6 were administered the Basic Academic Skills Samples, the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Tests, and the Metropolitan Achievement Test. Although the relationships among the three tests were reasonably strong, it appeared that the measures did not identify identical populations of at-risk students. (Author/JDD)

Parker, Susan C.; Berryman, Joan D. – Diagnostique, 1982
The Clinical Evaluation of Language Functions (CELF) was administered to 21 learning disabled and 21 matched normal adolescents. Results offered limited support for the construct validity of the CELF. (Author/CL)

Eaves, Ronald C.; Subotnik, Rena – Diagnostique, 1989
Validity of the Cognitive Levels Test (CLT) was evaluated by correlating test scores of 48 gifted 10-year-olds with scores on the Stanford-Binet intelligence scale as preschoolers as well as with scores from the California Achievement Test. Results indicated high degrees of CLT validity in both measuring cognitive ability and predicting academic…

Merrell, Kenneth W.; Mauk, Gary W. – Diagnostique, 1993
The Battelle Developmental Inventory (BDI) was administered to 121 young children, and parents rated them with the Social Skills Rating System 2-3 years after entry into the study. Correlations between the two measures revealed very weak to modest relationships, providing limited support for the BDI as a predictive measure of future…

Hunter, Maxwell W.; Ballash, Joan B. – Diagnostique, 1990
The Slosson Intelligence Test (SIT) and the Stanford-Binet, Fourth Edition (SBIV) were administered to 95 elementary students referred because of either learning problems or potential giftedness. SIT scores predicted SBIV verbal scores more accurately than composite scores. Overall the SIT predicted SBIV scores better for students with learning…

Mather, Nancy; Bos, Candace – Diagnostique, 1984
Performance of 46 gifted and talented students (7-12 years old) on the Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Cognitive Ability and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised was compared. Concurrent validity between the two full-scale measures was indicated. Scores on the alternative cluster of Broad Reasoning provided more accurate appraisal of…

Walker, David W.; Arnault, Lynne S. – Diagnostique, 1991
This study examined the construct validity of the KeyMath-Revised by testing the factorial model proposed by the test author. Results failed to confirm the proposed factorial model and suggested that the KeyMath-Revised assesses two domains that are difficult to interpret, rather than the three proposed by the test author. (Author/JDD)

Erford, Bradley T. – Diagnostique, 1996
Reliability and construct validity of over 1,000 mothers' responses to the Disruptive Behavior Rating Scale-Parent Version were studied. Results indicated excellent internal consistency and test-retest reliability on three subscales (Oppositional, Distractible, and Impulsive-Hyperactive) but only marginal reliability on the Antisocial Conduct…

Bachor, Dan G. – Diagnostique, 1989
Urban Canadian sixth-graders (n=84) were tested on 80 arithmetic word problems developed as part of a larger set to reflect individual differences in problem solving. Problems varied in complexity of language and amount of extraneous information present. Results indicated substantial internal consistency and concurrent validity relative to…
