School Policy and Attitude Cut Hispanic Achievement
Stern, Gary M.
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v69 n9 p39-43 May 2004
A joint study by Public Agenda and the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education has shed new light on the role of Hispanic parents in their child's education and shattered the myth that Latino parents have minimal educational aspirations for their children. Released in June, With Diploma in Hand: Hispanic High School Seniors Talk About Their Future indicates that Latino parents have high expectations for their offspring to succeed in school and attend college. In this article, the author presents the details of the findings and discusses how school policy and attitudes towards Hispanics cut their academic achievement.
