Learning Takes Time for At-Riskers
Woelfel, Kay
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v71 n4 p28-30 Dec 2005
The National Education Commission on Time and Learning reported that "The time available in a uniform six-hour day and a 180-day year is the unacknowledged design flaw in American education." Since then, varied initiatives have been tried to meet its recommendation that "American students must have more time for learning ... not to do more of the same, but to use all time in new, different, and better ways." Providing more time for learning is especially crucial for helping at-risk students, and the National Association of School Psychologists has recommended improving educational success by "extended year, extended day, and summer school programs that focus on facilitating the development of academic skills." In this article, the author describes five school programs that have effectively extended or redefined time in order to give struggling students an opportunity to further those academic skills.
