Giving Up Name-Calling for a Week, or Forever
Watchler, Carol
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v70 n7 p40-44 Mar 2005
Name-calling is a pervasive practice, particularly in middle schools. According to students, parents, teachers, counselors, and other school staff who see its effects, it doesn't just go away. Instead, rampant name-calling can create a climate where children become disheartened, lose self-confidence, and dread coming to school. Efforts to counteract such a climate are welcomed by school personnel who witness what name-calling does to the learning environment. So when members of the New Jersey Education Association heard about the No Name-Calling Week, they embraced the concept. In this article, the author presents how this program works as a preventive measure against bullying in schools.
