Community Colleges Are Key to Homeland Security
Gilroy, Marilyn
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v70 n9 p32-36 May 2005
In this article, the author discusses the importance of Homeland Security in community colleges as a counter terrorism solution. Homeland Security, a phrase born after September 11, 2001, has entered the nation's vocabulary and is now becoming part of the curriculum at hundreds of colleges and universities. No sector of higher education is responding faster to this need than community colleges which are now offering degree and certificate programs and building new facilities. For instance, Owens Community College, near Toledo, Ohio will have a $10-million center featuring an anti-terrorism simulation center. The 100-acre Fire and Police Training Center for Professional Development and Homeland Security will have a command and simulation center for regional anti-terrorism and emergency management, along with state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories. As leaders of community colleges embrace an increasing role in homeland security, they are also pondering how to proceed over the longer term.
