A Single 50-Minute Lunch Hour Fits Everyone
Goodman, Carole
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v72 n6 p42-48 Feb 2007
Switching from multiple lunch periods to one lunch period for the nearly 2,000 students at James Hubert Blake High School in Silver Spring, Maryland, has contributed more to a positive school climate than any other single factor in the eight years since the school opened. This article presents how Blake has come up with the single 50-minute lunch period model. The one lunch period at Blake began in 2000. After six years in practice, one lunch period at Blake has empowered students and staff members, raised student achievement, improved staff collegiality and planning, and overall created an extremely effective and overwhelmingly positive school climate. This article also offers some tips which might be of some value for schools contemplating having a single lunch period.
