Using words of known selection values arranged in a counterbalanced order, it was shown that subjects' ratings of the "imagery value" of each word resulted in error which favored the first position in the series when stimuli were homogeneous. The error did not occur with words which were markedly heterogeneous. (Author)

When researchers use the Guttman scalogram rather than multidimensional techniques, scalogram error assignment techniques should be questioned. The mixed standard scale is a rating format that allows researchers to count internally inconsistent response patterns. This study investigated the meaning of these counts, using 943 accountants as raters. The ability of respondents to properly execute Thurstone scaling procedures as opposed to Likert scaling procedures was investigated in a sample of high school students. Results indicate difficulty among respondents using Thurstone-type instructions to resist giving Likert-type responses. (JKS)
