Pere J. Ferrando; Fabia Morales-Vives; Ana Hernández-Dorado – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 2024
In recent years, some models for binary and graded format responses have been proposed to assess unipolar variables or "quasi-traits." These studies have mainly focused on clinical variables that have traditionally been treated as bipolar traits. In the present study, we have made a proposal for unipolar traits measured with continuous…

von Davier, Matthias; Tyack, Lillian; Khorramdel, Lale – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 2023
Automated scoring of free drawings or images as responses has yet to be used in large-scale assessments of student achievement. In this study, we propose artificial neural networks to classify these types of graphical responses from a TIMSS 2019 item. We are comparing classification accuracy of convolutional and feed-forward approaches. Our…

Zimmerman, Donald W. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1983
A definition of test validity as the ratio of a covariance term to a variance term, analogous to the classical definition of test reliability, is proposed. When error scores on distinct tests are uncorrelated, the proposed definition coincides with the usual one, but it remains meaningful when error scores are correlated. (Author/BW)

Brennan, Robert L.; Prediger, Dale J. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1981
This paper considers some appropriate and inappropriate uses of coefficient kappa and alternative kappa-like statistics. Discussion is restricted to the descriptive characteristics of these statistics for measuring agreement with categorical data in studies of reliability and validity. (Author)

Rachman, D.; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1981
A confirmatory factor analysis provided support for the result that Holland's Self-Directed Search measures six factors: realistic, investigative, artistic, social-enterprising, conventional, and a sixth general interest factor. Generally, the psychological relationship among types confirms the hexagon model proposed by Holland and others.…

Hsu, Louis M. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1980
A method based on the Poisson approximation to the binomial distribution and on the relation between the Chi-Squared distribution and the Poisson distribution is suggested for selected use in determining the number of items and passing scores in mastery Lests. (Author/RL)

Schaufeli, Wilmar B.; Bakker, Arnold B.; Salanova, Marisa – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 2006
This article reports on the development of a short questionnaire to measure work engagement--a positive work-related state of fulfillment that is characterized by vigor, dedication, and absorption. Data were collected in 10 different countries (N = 14,521), and results indicated that the original 17-item Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) can be…

Kingma, Johannes; Loth, Franciska L. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1985
The validation of the developmental Mokken scale for seriation was discussed. It was shown that the observed scale was invariant for different samples from previous research. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that a selection of two seriation tasks on the scale accounted for 76.4 percent of the explained variance. (Author/DWH)

Fox, Richard N. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1984
Pascarella and Terenzini developed five factorially derived institutional integration scales to operationalize Tinto's conceptual model of college student withdrawal. Some psychometric characteristics of these scales were estimated for disadvantaged students at an urban commuter college. The scales showed improved characteristics after item…

Rezmovic, Eva Lantos; Rezmovic, Victor – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1981
A multitrait-multimethod matrix containing two methods of measuring 12 personality traits was analyzed and confirmatory factor analysis was applied to the data. Although unexplained variance remained, method factors and a general personality factor significantly improved the fit of a model containing only trait factors. (Author/RL)

Wirth, Sharon; Pease, Damaris – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1983
Convergent and discriminant validity of the Iowa Social Competency Scale-Preschool form was investigated using the Campbell and Fiske validity model. The methods involved were observer, mother, father and teacher ratings whereas the traits were three test factors of social activator, reassurance, and hypersensitivity. Subjects were 92 pre-school…

Youngblood, Stuart A.; Martin, Billy J. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
A nonadditive linear model consisting of both Graduate Management Admission Test scores and undergraduate grades adequately portrayed the decision-making process of a Master of Business Administration program admissions officer. The results are discussed in light of the recent criticisms of the use of standardized tests as admissions criteria.…
