To investigate the claim that the Statistics Attitude Survey (SAS) contains a number of achievement-related items rather than attitude-related items, the SAS and the Attitudes Toward Statistics (ATS) were administered to 280 introductory statistics students. Students' perception of overall teaching performance is strongly aligned with feelings about the course. A method is presented for separating the effects of the teacher, the course, and individual student groups. Instruments were developed to measure the confidence and self-image of preservice elementary school teachers in relation to both biology and physical science.
