The Redemptive Power of Sports in the Writing Classroom
Cherie Parsons
English Journal, v104 n1 p13-18 2014
If Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences is taken seriously, then teachers ought to capitalize more often on what has been learned: many students are oozing over with extraordinary bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, and teachers ought to encourage them to explore in writing the physical work and coordinated efforts their bodies are capable of. To dismiss or deny the relationship many students have with sports or their physicality is to relegate to the sidelines a powerful influence in their lives. One of the aims of "essay-ing" is to learn to ask questions, and one of the goals of reading and writing is critical thinking; it is undeniable that students will rise to the challenge, provided teachers coach them, and do some of their best, most engaged thinking and questioning about the topics that matter most to them. Teachers ought not to ask students to compartmentalize their lives, enter the classrooms to attend to and learn only from literary characters' conflicts, struggles, and passions while simultaneously ignoring their own.
