Assessment Challenges in the Common Core Era
Sandra Murphy; Mary Ann Smith
English Journal, v103 n1 p104-110 2013
The authors consider how portfolios can meet the challenges of assessing various aspects of literacy and student learning. The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) specify the knowledge and skills students need for success in college and the workplace--including writing in all content areas. The CCSS attends to range as a core theme in a more comprehensive way than previous English language arts standards because it extends to the circumstances in which students write, including the tools they use, the amount of time they spend, and how they collaborate with others, or not. Range also refers to variety of purposes, audiences, and tasks--those that integrate reading, writing, and research and those that do not. This article suggests portfolios as an assessment that can capture a student's range.
