This study examines the search behavior of 380 intra-urban residential migrants, who were interviewed within four months of moving to a new location. The study examines the effect of a prior tornado disaster occurring in a community and that community's current response to a tornado threat. The study concludes that it is not past experience with tornadoes that relates to response to warnings, but rather awareness. To test the hypothesis that residents of larger cities are less helpful to strangers than are residents of small towns, three New Zealand towns with varying population densities were studied for helping behavior. The research confirms that population density is a reliable predictor of non-helping behavior. (RE)

Eye contact with a stranger was relatively rare in center-city Philadelphia, more common in a suburb, and very common in a small rural town. Speaking occurred only with eye contact.
