This article profiles Camp Barnabas, a non-denominational Christian camp for people with special needs located in southwest Missouri. For one week, campers have every opportunity possible to be a participant in the world around them, not just an observer. The camp's goal is to provide a typical camp experience--bugs, chants, cheers and incredible new friendships in an environment that helps the campers as much as they need while empowering them to control the process. The challenge course is just one of the activities offered at Camp Barnabas. Using harnesses, a unique chair with webbing and a special pulley system, campers who cannot maneuver themselves up the 40-foot climbing wall are hoisted to the top, then transferred via an accessible device through each ropes course element. Camp Barnabas is the only place that can give special needs children the experience of being included--not for what they are or what they CAN'T do--but for who they are and what they CAN do.
