Content Validity of the Teacher Impression Scale Assessment of Preschool Children's Peer Social Competence
Grantee Submission
The purpose of this study was to conduct a content validity analysis of the Teacher Impression Scale (TIS), which is an observer rating scale designed to assess preschool children peer social competence. The TIS was originally developed in the 1980s and used in research in the 1990s-2010s. The was the first step in an instrument development process for revising the TIS for teacher-use in their preschool classrooms. Participants were member of five consistency groups, consisting respectively of child development scientists, leaders in early childhood equity, culture, race, and ethnicity, practitioner, English speaking family members and Spanish-speaking family members. Constituency group members completed the Content Validity Index and the participated in focus groups where they discussed individual items and the format of the scale. The information was then used to revise the scale for further psychometric testing. Also, participants suggested that there is a need for a scale like the TIS for use in early childhood programs.
