Pragmatic Presupposition and Old Information in the Use of the Subjunctive Mood in Spanish.
Mejias-Bikandi, Errapel
Hispania, v81 n4 p941-48 Dec 1998
Examination of the behavior of different types of Spanish complements in two different grammatical constructions supports the argument that behavior differences result from the complement's different pragmatic status. Empirical evidence supports the hypothesis that complements representing old information appear in the subjunctive mood. The notion of old information serves to revise standard explanations of use of mood in some instances. (Author/MSE)
