Taylor, Paul J.; Donald, Ian – Human Communication Research, 2004
This research extends recent efforts to differentiate communication in crisis negotiations (Taylor, 2002) by examining how negotiators' behavior differs across context. Data were 108 interaction episodes transcribed from 12 simulated crisis negotiations and coded at the level of thought units across 41 behavioral variables. Results of a smallest…

McLaughlin, Margaret L.; And Others – Human Communication Research, 1981
Compares story receipt and story sequencing variables of males and females in dyadic conversations. Significant differences exist in the amount of time spent as story recipients and with regard to two story sequencing devices--embedded repeat and marked repeat. No differences are noted in the number of sequential stories told. (JMF)
Descriptors: Behavior Patterns, Communication Research, Females, Interaction

Pettegrew, Loyd S.; Turkat, Ira Daniel – Human Communication Research, 1986
Presents results from two studies of how lower-back-pain patients communicate to health care providers. Suggests specific directions for future research. (MS)

Doelger, Joel A.; And Others – Human Communication Research, 1986
Suggests conditions or "cues" that provoke the process of second- guessing, and describes an experimental study confirming that interactants do second-guess when confronted with those cues. (MS)

McQuillen, Jeffrey S. – Human Communication Research, 1986
Describes the compliance-resisting behaviors in selected communication by first-, fourth-, and tenth-grade students. Seeks to assess the development of ability to construct compliance-resisting strategies. (MS)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Behavior Patterns, Communication Research, Developmental Stages

Stech, Ernest L. – Human Communication Research, 1975
Attempts to determine the degree to which communication may be viewed as structured sequences of behavior. Includes an analysis of discussion groups, teacher classroom behavior, speech therapy sessions and police-civilian telephone calls. See CS 703 503 for availability information. (MH)

Fisher, B. Aubrey – Human Communication Research, 1983
Investigated the impact of sexual composition and competitive/cooperative orientation on interaction patterns in same-sex and mixed-sex dyads. Found that the competitive or cooperative orientation of the interactants exerts a far greater impact on the communication behavior of dyads than does their sexual composition. (PD)
