What Is and What Should Be: Maternal Perceptions of Their Roles in the NICU.
Bruns, Deborah A.; McCollum, Jeanette A.; Cohen-Addad, Nicole
Infant-Toddler Intervention: The Transdisciplinary Journal, v9 n3 p281-98 Sep 1999
This study examined the development of maternal roles in seven mothers of medically fragile, premature infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of an urban, teaching hospital using data sources such as interviews, observations, and document review. Mothers gradually assumed caregiving roles of worrier, novice, learner and expert and communication roles of decision maker, information collector, advocate, and negotiator. (Author/DB)
