Croft, W. B.; And Others – Information Processing and Management, 1989
Presents a model of information retrieval based on plausible inference which suggests that techniques should be found for combining multiple search strategies into an overall assessment of a document's relevance. The results of experiments designed to test this approach using a simple spreading activation search are discussed. (21 references) (CLB)

Bell, C. L. M.; Jones, K. P. – Information Processing and Management, 1980
Explains, with supporting figures and flowcharts of programing logic, two search strategies introduced to the MORPHS System since 1976: one that employs the normal Boolean operators in strings without bracketing or in the form of marked steps, and one that treats a string of keywords as a compound word. Bookstein, A.; Klein, S. T. – Information Processing and Management, 1990
Describes the theoretical framework of a retrieval system that uses data structures called bitmaps to improve search algorithms for medium-sized systems. Information retrieval systems that contain the full text of the documents are discussed, and the use of inverted files such as concordances for small texts is explained. (24 references) (LRW)

Cadolino, C.; Guazzo, M. – Information Processing and Management, 1982
Considers problem of optimal scheduling of Boolean expression (each Boolean variable represents binary outcome of program module) on single-processor system. Optimization discussed consists of finding operand arrangement that minimizes average execution costs representing consumption of resources (elapsed time, main memory, number of…

Bartschi, Martin – Information Processing and Management, 1985
Presents a general mathematical framework for information retrieval, in which query evaluation is seen as a mapping from the free term algebra built by query descriptors and weights to the semantic algebra of evaluation value. Competing mathematical models that try to describe how retrieval systems behave are reviewed. (Author/MBR)

Boyce, Bert – Information Processing and Management, 1982
An information retrieval system which aspires to retrieval of relevant documents should have second stage which will order topical set to provide maximum informativeness to requestor. A two-stage system concerned only with topicality can be iterated to generate a high recall set and discard imprecise documents without user input. (EJS)

Danilowicz, Czeslaw – Information Processing and Management, 1994
Discusses end-user searching in Boolean information retrieval systems considers the role of search intermediaries and proposes a model of user preferences that incorporates a user's profile. Highlights include document representation; information queries; document output ranking; calculating user profiles; and selecting documents for a local…

Lorchirachoonkul, Vichit – Information Processing and Management, 1982
The concept of Thai soundex system for name search as method of information retrieval is developed and evaluated by extending and modifying Odell and Russell soundex system to fit specific characteristics of Thai language. Thai consonants, letter codes, and evaluation of system in name file of 61,215 records are highlighted. (EJS)

Bratley, Paul; Choueka, Yaacov – Information Processing and Management, 1982
Presents uniform and efficient approach for processing all truncated query terms in information retrieval which requires one disk access to obtain from the permuted dictionary all strings represented by truncated term. The problem of the overhead storage required to implement the permuted dictionary is discussed. Fifteen references are provided.…

Kropp, D.; Walch, G. – Information Processing and Management, 1981
Describes an indexing technique based on overlapping word fragments as reference strings that are linked in a directed graph structure which makes possible exact match-, partial match-, and masked-partial match-retrieval and indicates search strategies for each case. Eight figures, two tables, and nine references are provided. (RBF)

Cohen, Paul R.; Kjeldsen, Rick – Information Processing and Management, 1987
Describes GRANT, an expert system for finding sources of funding given research proposals. The architecture of GRANT and the implementation of constrained spreading activation (a modified search algorithm based on semantic memory) are described, and recall and precision rates are analyzed. (Author/LRW)

de Heer, T. – Information Processing and Management, 1982
Addresses problem of developing machine-based information system capable of indicating one document, out of a set of documents written in natural language, which shows maximal degree of homeosemy (relationship in meaning between two texts language-fragments ) toward natural language query. Linguistic aspects, information traces, trigrams,…

Paice, Chris D. – Information Processing and Management, 1991
Proposes that topic representations should consist of excerpts from domain thesaurus, generated by spreading activation technique. Algorithm for generating excerpts is outlined and exemplified, and problem of assessing resemblance between two excerpts is discussed. Whether existing thesauri are adequate for this purpose is questioned, and ideas…
