Edmonds, Caroline J.; Isaacs, Elizabeth B.; Visscher, Peter M.; Rogers, Mary; Lanigan, Julie; Singhal, Atul; Lucas, Alan; Gringras, Paul; Denton, Jane; Deary, Ian J. – Intelligence, 2008
We studied the age-related differences in inspection time and multiple cognitive domains in a group of monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) twins aged 7 to 17 years. Data from 111 twin pairs and 19 singleton siblings were included. We found clear age-related trends towards more efficient visual information processing in older participants. There…

Fagan, Joseph F.; Holland, Cynthia R.; Wheeler, Karyn – Intelligence, 2007
Young adults, originally tested as infants for their ability to process information as measured by selective attention to novelty (an operational definition of visual recognition memory), were revisited. A current estimate of IQ was obtained as well as a measure of academic achievement. Information processing ability at 6-12 months was predictive…

Hunt, Earl; And Others – Intelligence, 1988
The predictability of individual differences in the ability to reason about dynamic displays from tests using static displays was studied in 170 adults given paper-and-pencil and computer controlled tests. Several multivariate analyses indicated that the ability to reason about dynamic motion was distinct from the ability to reason about static…

Todman, John; Cowdy, Natascha – Intelligence, 1993
Results from a study in which 25 deaf children and 25 hearing children completed a vocabulary test and a compound stimulus visual information task support the hypothesis that performance on cognitive tasks is dependent on compatibility of task demands with a coding orientation. (SLD)

Caryl, P. G.; Harper, Alison – Intelligence, 1996
Effects on the event-related potential (ERP) waveform of differences in stimuli (task difficulty) and threshold were studied with 35 undergraduates performing a visual inspection time task and 30 performing a pitch discrimination task. In both tasks, ERP differences related to threshold were temporally localized differences in waveform shape. (SLD)

Zelazo, Philip R.; And Others – Intelligence, 1995
To assess changes in processing speed in the second and third years of life, 2 sequential visual events were shown to 22-, 27-, and 32-month-old children, 12 at each age. Response clusters indicated that speed of processing increased with age and that a proactive inhibition declined with age. (SLD)

Deary, Ian J.; McCrimmon, Rory J.; Bradshaw, Jonathan – Intelligence, 1997
Studies with 65 adults found two new visual processing tasks, visual change detection and visual movement detection, to be correlated with inspection time and the nonverbal scores from the Alice Helm 4 test of general intelligence. Results are discussed in terms of the correlation between inspection time and intelligence and the psychobiological…

Moore, Derek G.; And Others – Intelligence, 1995
Results of a study involving 15 mentally retarded and 15 nonretarded control subjects matched for mental age suggest that some low-level aspects of person-related (and probably object-related) perception may not involve the same high-level symbolic functions typically employed in intelligence-quotient related functions. (SLD)

Chaiken, Scott R. – Intelligence, 1994
In experiments involving 178 and 190 military recruits, spatial, quantitative, and verbal inspection time (IT) and visual search (VS) tasks and an intelligence test were administered. Results indicate that IT performance has a component related to intelligence tests and an independent component related to processing speed tests such as VS. (SLD)

Lewis, Michael; Brooks-Gunn, Jeanne – Intelligence, 1981
The predictive power of various cognitive skills at three months of age in terms of later cognitive functioning was examined. Visual habituation and recovery predicted later intellectual functioning at 24 months better than global intelligence or object permanence scores. Changes in cognitive functioning may be a transformation of skills.…

Sampson, Paul D.; Kerr, Beth; Olson, Heather Carmichael; Streissguth, Ann P.; Hunt, Earl; Barr, Helen M.; Bookstein, Fred L.; Thiede, Keith – Intelligence, 1997
Aspects of cognitive processing were evaluated for 462 adolescents followed for 14 years. Adolescents had been exposed prenatally to a broad range of maternal drinking, mostly at "social" levels. Alcohol-related deficits on cognitive tasks were summarized by a speed-accuracy trade-off on the spatial-visual reasoning task. (SLD)

DeShon, Richard P.; And Others – Intelligence, 1995
The verbal overshadowing paradigm was used with 167 undergraduates to determine whether performance across all items on Raven's Advanced Progressive Matrices was dependent on the same cognitive processes. Results clearly indicated that a subset of items was dependent on visuospatial processes, while another subset required verbal-analytic…
