Reasons cited included inadequacy of user catalog skills, reluctance to ask for help, not always receiving help upon requesting it, and needed materials were frequently checked out. A literature survey of user attitudes and perceptions of circulation services (loan periods, availability of materials, hours of service) in academic libraries indicates a need for better library skills training and professional staff at the circulation desk. (LS)

A study at the King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (Saudi Arabia) revealed that the overall materials availability performance rose from 63.8% to 76% when library staff provided assistance.
