Interviewed bartenders (N=61) and asked them to rate excessive drinking customers on 12 traits and compare them with their concept of the average social drinker. Results indicated that excessive social drinkers are predominantly bimodal-introverted or extroverted, and seek the company of others after they start drinking. (LLL)

Interviewed 20 female and 44 male bartenders. Findings indicated that both male and female bartenders are reliable reporters of their own and their customers' drinking behaviors and are aware of causes of problem drinking. Examined drinking patterns in 256 graduate social work students. Results showed 218 used alcohol. Wine was the generally preferred beverage, despite age, sex, ethnic, and religious differences. Hispanics were the lightest drinkers. A substantial majority of the students wanted course work in alcoholism. (JAC)
