Foxx, R. M.; Faw, Gerald D. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1990
A long-term followup (from 26 to 57 months) of echolalia and correct question-answering was conducted with six mentally retarded adult subjects identified from three previously published studies. Echolalia was lower than in baseline in 80.6 percent of the followups. Issues related to the study of maintenance are discussed. (Author/DB)

Pace, Gary M.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1993
Assessment of self-injurious behavior (SIB) in three individuals with developmental disabilities revealed that the behavior was an escape response maintained by negative reinforcement. Treatment consisted of extinction plus instructional fading and resulted in immediate and large reductions in SIB behaviors. Maintenance occurred as instruction…

Charlop, Marjorie H.; Milstein, Janice P. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1989
Three autistic boys, aged 6-7, observed videotaped conversations consisting of 2 people discussing toys. Subsequent assessment of the boys using untrained topics of conversation, new stimuli, new persons, and other settings indicated that the children learned through video modeling, generalized their conversational skills, and maintained…

Ingenmey, Rita; Van Houten, Ron – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1991
A 10-year-old autistic child was trained to imitate verbal prompts describing the child's motor responses. When intervention was introduced in the form of a gradual delay in the presentation of the verbal prompts, the child's spontaneous speech on trained items increased. Generalization and maintenance were analyzed. (Author/JDD)

Linscheid, Thomas R.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1990
The Self-Injurious Behavior Inhibiting System (in which mild and brief contingent electric stimulation is delivered) was evaluated with five cases involving severe mental retardation and previously unmanageable self-injurious behavior. Findings indicated almost complete elimination of the self-injurious behavior with followup suggesting continuing…

Dunlap, Lee Kern; Dunlap, Glen – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1989
Individualized self-monitoring checklists were developed for 3 learning-disabled students, aged 10-13; students followed the checklists as they completed their subtraction assignments. The procedures produced immediate gains in correct responding; when the checklists were removed and the previous incentives condition was reinstated, continued…

Alavosius, Mark P.; Sulzer-Azaroff, Beth – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1990
The performance of four direct service providers in feeding, positioning, and transferring physically disabled patients was measured. Use of written instructions led to slight and usually brief changes in performance. The introduction of feedback, especially a continuous schedule, resulted in marked improvements which were maintained. (Author/JDD)
Descriptors: Adults, Attendants, Caregivers, Feedback

Love, Steven R.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1990
Two autistic children were treated for specific fears. Children were exposed gradually to fearful situations, with mothers serving as therapists and reinforcers. Five-month and one-year follow-up assessments with one child showed maintenance of treatment effects. (Author/DB)
Descriptors: Autism, Behavior Change, Fear, Maintenance

Harchik, Alan E.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1992
A model of ongoing consultation was effectively implemented in a community group home for eight adults with severe and profound mental retardation. Two consultants taught staff members to use a token reinforcement system, engage clients in a variety of activities, and improve staff interactions with clients. (Author/DB)
Descriptors: Adults, Caregivers, Consultation Programs, Group Homes

Lloyd, John Wills; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1989
Five students, aged 10-11, with serious emotional disturbances and/or learning disabilities, recorded their attentive behavior and academic productivity. Then performance was assessed under a choice condition, the treatment program was faded, and maintenance was probed. Results revealed that both treatments produced and maintained improvements in…

Green, Carolyn W.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1991
A management program was implemented to increase the training activities and decrease nonwork behavior of eight direct-care staff in a facility for individuals with mental retardation. Improvements were maintained during a 43-week period, staff acceptability measures were positive, and beneficial changes occurred in clients. (JDD)
Descriptors: Attitudes, Behavior Change, Caregivers, Maintenance

Secan, Kristin E.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1989
Results of a study with four autistic students (ages five-nine) showed that a picture training procedure was effective in teaching a generalized response to questions for which the relevant cue was visible, whereas specific generalization programing was required for situations in which the relevant cue was not visible. (Author/DB)

Hendrickson, Jo M.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1993
A structured coaching strategy was effectively used with three day-care teachers, resulting in (1) substantial increases in delivery of behavioral support of social interactions of children with developmental disabilities; and (2) marked increases in positive interactions of socially withdrawn children. Long-term maintenance effects were also…

Altus, Deborah E.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1991
Two male adults with cocaine dependence received a behavioral intervention comprised of contingency management and the community reinforcement approach. Reinforcement was delivered contingent on submitting cocaine-free (and subsequently marijuana-free) urine specimens. The intervention was efficacious in achieving abstinence from cocaine and…

Neef, Nancy A.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1991
Two studies evaluating a video-based instructional package for training 12 respite care providers found that performance during simulated situations improved in 5 of 6 skill areas, with no differences whether videotapes were viewed alone, with a partner, or with structured group training. Correct responding was generalized and skills were…
