Athens, Elizabeth S.; Vollmer, Timothy R. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2010
We manipulated relative reinforcement for problem behavior and appropriate behavior using differential reinforcement of alternative behavior (DRA) without an extinction component. Seven children with developmental disabilities participated. We manipulated duration (Experiment 1), quality (Experiment 2), delay (Experiment 3), or a combination of…

Mace, F. Charles; Prager, Kevin L.; Thomas, Karen; Kochy, Jane; Dyer, Tim J.; Perry, Lora; Pritchard, Duncan – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2009
We evaluated the evocative effects of four conditions (high- and low-preference activities, low and divided attention) and stimulant medication on the behavior of a 16-year-old boy with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and moderate mental retardation. All behavior (activity engagement, activity changes, inappropriate touching, rude…

Codding, Robin S.; Livanis, Andrew; Pace, Gary M.; Vaca, Leslie – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2008
The current study replicated the positive effects of performance feedback on treatment integrity and extended previous work by examining reactivity using a multiple baseline design with alternating treatments for observer-present and observer-absent conditions on teachers' implementation of a classwide behavior plan. No differences were found…

Burgio, Louis D.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1980
Four experimental Ss (9 to 14 years) were taught through self-instruction to focus attention and cope with math and printing tasks, then were systematically and sequentially exposed to photo slides of distracting situations, to audio distractors, and to in vivo distractors. Results suggested that the training package produced changes in self…

Powell, Shawn; Nelson, Brett – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1997
The effects of choosing academic assignments on the undesirable behaviors manifested by a second-grade student with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder were analyzed. The student was in a general education classroom. A reversal design showed that undesirable behaviors decreased when the student was given a choice of academic assignments.…

Guevremont, David D.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1988
Four preschoolers (ages 4-5) received self-instructional training in overt and covert self-verbalizations. Treatment effects were evident in the training setting. Generalization of self-verbalizations to the classroom setting was related to changes in performance accuracy, on-task behavior, and efficiency in completing academic work. (Author/JW)

Magee, Sandy K.; Ellis, Janet – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2000
Extinction effects were evaluated in a multiple baseline across behaviors design with 2 boys (ages 7 and 8) with disabilities after just one of several target problem behaviors was observed during a functional analysis. Other target behaviors emerged as extinction was introduced sequentially across all problem behaviors. (Contains three…

Northup, John; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1997
To assess the drug-behavior interaction effects with an 8-year-old boy with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, classroom antecedent and consequent stimuli were alternated within a school day, while drug conditions were alternated across days. Results indicate that peer attention maintained disruptive behavior when methylphenidate was…

Gulley, Veronica; Northup, John – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1997
Individualized assessments of the effects of three dosages of methylphenidate were conducted for two students (ages 10-11) with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder within each child's classroom using behavioral, academic, and social measures. At least one or more dosages were associated with improvement for both children in each area.…

Ardoin, Scott P.; Martens, Brian K. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2000
Double-blind placebo-controlled procedures examined whether 6 children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder could recognize medication effects. Three children were able to accurately report their medication status at levels greater than chance. Accuracy of reports was related to dosage level, differences in behaviors, and the presence of…

Kern, Lee; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1995
A functional analysis of breath-holding episodes in a 7-year-old girl with severe mental retardation and Cornelia-de-Lange syndrome indicated that breath holding served an operant function, primarily to gain access to attention. Use of extinction, scheduled attention, and a picture card communication system decreased breath holding. (Author/SW)

DuPaul, George J.; Ervin, Ruth A.; Hook, Christine L.; McGoey, Kara E. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1998
A study investigated effects of classwide peer tutoring (CWPT) on classroom behavior and academic performance of 18 students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). CWPT led to improvements in performance in math or spelling for 50% of students with ADHD, along with reductions in off-task behavior for most participants. (Author/CR)

Friman, Patrick C.; Poling, Alan – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1995
This paper summarizes basic research on response effort in diverse applied areas including deceleration of aberrant behavior, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, oral habits, littering, and problem solving. The paper concludes that response effort as an independent variable has potent effects, and research exploring the applied benefits of…

Cooper, Linda J.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1992
Two studies conducted with elementary-age children who displayed behavior problems (some with mild mental retardation) found that task preferences, task demands, and adult attention showed a positive relationship to improved behavior for some subjects. The studies were conducted in an outpatient clinic and a classroom. (Author/JDD)
