Oliver, Chris; Berg, Katy; Moss, Jo; Arron, Kate; Burbidge, Cheryl – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 2011
We investigated autism spectrum disorder (ASD) symptomatology, hyperactivity and affect in seven genetic syndromes; Angelman (AS; n = 104), Cri du Chat (CdCS; 58), Cornelia de Lange (CdLS; 101), Fragile X (FXS; 191), Prader-Willi (PWS; 189), Smith-Magenis (SMS; 42) and Lowe (LS; 56) syndromes (age range 4-51). ASD symptomatology was heightened in…

Adrien, J. L.; And Others – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1987
The Behavior Observation Scale was used to compare normal (N=10), retarded (N=10), and autistic (N=10) children. Analysis indicated overlap between retarded and autistic children and a distinct autistic behavioral pattern involving disturbances of sensory modulation and motility. (Author/DB)
Descriptors: Autism, Behavior Patterns, Mental Retardation, Sensory Integration

Dykens, Elisabeth; And Others – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1988
Evaluation of the cognitive, behavioral, and adaptive functioning of 12 retarded men with fragile X syndrome indicated that fragile X men were largely indistinguishable from comparison groups. They were, however, significantly more likely to have achieved levels of adaptive functioning commensurate with their intellectual abilities. (Author/DB)

Wing, Lorna; Gould, Judith – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1979
The prevalence of severe impairments of social interaction, language abnormalities, and repetitive stereotyped behaviors was investigated in a group of 132 children under 15 years old, consisting of a socially impaired group (more than half of whom were severely retarded) and a comparison group of sociable severely mentally retarded. Author/DLS)

Charman, Tony; Baron-Cohen, Simon – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1997
A study of 22 children with autism and 19 children with mental retardation found that, when prompted, school-age and adolescent subjects with autism did not differ from children with mental retardation in production of functional play acts and situationally appropriate object substitution, but did produce fewer novel pretend play acts. (CR)

Vig, Susan; Jedrysek, Eleonora – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1999
Examines issues in the differential diagnosis of autism in preschool children with significant cognitive impairment, including the use of traditional diagnostic guidelines for preschoolers with developmental delays, developmental changes in behavioral characteristics, involvement of cognitive factors in symptom expression, overlap between autism…

Dykens, Elisabeth M.; And Others – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1997
A study examined the cognitive and behavioral profiles in 10 individuals (ages 14-51) with Smith-Magenis syndrome. Results found the individuals showed significant relative weaknesses in sequential processing and strengths in naming a partially completed drawing, identifying things, and in reading/decoding. Behavioral findings indicated…

Bodfish, James W.; Symons, Frank J.; Parker, Dawn E.; Lewis, Mark H. – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 2000
A study compared specific repetitive behaviors in 32 adults with autism with 34 controls with mental retardation. The occurrence of each behavior category, except dyskinesias, was higher in individuals with autism and they showed a greater number of topographies of stereotypy and compulsions. Repetitive behavior severity also predicated autism…

Barthelemy, Catherine; And Others – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1992
This study examined the effectiveness of the Behavior Summarized Evaluation to discriminate 58 autistic from 58 nonautistic mentally retarded children. The measure clearly separated the two samples with between-group differences highest on four items indicating the most particular pattern in autistic children was the association of autistic…

Dykens, Elisabeth M.; And Others – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1993
Adaptive behavior in mentally retarded males with fragile X syndrome was longitudinally examined in 17 subjects, ages 1 to 17. Findings included relative strength in daily living skills and weakness in socialization only for older subjects, and significant declines in adaptive behavior scores from first to second testing for the older subjects.…

Schatz, Jeffrey; Hamdan-Allen, Ghada – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1995
Scores from the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale were compared to age and performance IQ for 72 children and adolescents with autism and 37 nonautistic controls with mental retardation. The relationship between the two groups' adaptive behavior profiles was stable from preschool age through adolescence. Increasing IQ was associated with lower…

Oliver, Chris; And Others – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1993
In this case study, interactions were examined between features of Rett syndrome and operant conditioning as determinants of self-injurious behavior (SIB). Analysis suggested different functions for two forms of SIB: automatic reinforcement by sensory stimulation and escape from social interactions. Features of Rett syndrome tended to maximize the…
