Information from all 50 states on agency diagnostic practices regarding autism revealed considerable variability between Departments of Public Instruction (DPI) and Departments of Mental Health (DMH). DPIs reported far more heterogeneous practices than DMHs. DMHs were more likely than DPIs to recognize autism by category and to sanction specific criteria. (JW)
