Celestino, Teresa; Marchetti, Fabio – Journal of Chemical Education, 2020
This paper focuses on system concept use in teaching either chemical core concepts or interdisciplinary chemistry-related topics. The system concept is important in order to develop global competences, and chemistry teaching plays a key role in this context. A questionnaire has been administered to two different samples, Italian teachers and…

Bonjour, Jessica L.; Hass, Alisa L.; Pollock, David W.; Huebner, Aaron; Frost, John A. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2017
Development of benchtop, portable Fourier transform nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and infrared (IR) spectrometers has opened up opportunities for creating university-high school partnerships that provide high school students with hands-on experience with NMR and IR instruments. With recent changes to the international baccalaureate chemistry…

Hapkiewicz, Annis – Journal of Chemical Education, 1999
Argues that students lack an understanding of how research is done. Proposes a science exercise that provides authentic research experience for ninth-grade students in an advanced-placement chemistry class. (CCM)
Descriptors: Advanced Placement Programs, Chemistry, Grade 9, Hands on Science

Alber, Mark – Journal of Chemical Education, 2001
Introduces a project incorporating creative writing and advanced placement chemistry. Uses texts and laboratory experiments for the basis of the writing assignments. (YDS)

Mercurio, Joseph; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1984
Compared performance of Syracuse University Project Advance (PA) chemistry students (N=35) with advanced placement (AP) candidates on the AP chemistry examination. PA students scored slightly above the national average on the examination, and students who performed well (B or better) in AP chemistry also did well on the examination. (JN)

Snow, Albert J. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1984
Project Advance is a high school chemistry program equivalent to chemistry taught on the Syracuse University campus. A survey reveals that teachers in general have positive attitudes and good impressions of the course. Positive attitudes and high regard for the experience were also noted by students completing the course. (JN)

Advanced Placement Chemistry: A Feasible, Alternative Approach to Advanced Placement Chemistry Labs.

Bergmeier, Brian D. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1984
Discusses two factors to consider when initiating advanced placement (AP) chemistry, namely, the quality of those teaching the program and the time necessary to teach the relevant concepts. Suggests offering laboratory sessions during evening hours as an alternative to traditional daytime arrangements for laboratory blocks. (JN)
Descriptors: Advanced Placement Programs, Chemistry, Scheduling, Science Curriculum

Journal of Chemical Education, 1983
Summarizes papers and minipapers on honors and advanced placement (AP) chemistry courses presented at the Seventh Biennial Conference on Chemical Education (Stillwater, Oklahoma 1982). Advantages/disadvantages of AP chemistry, high school/college courses, and grouping all chemistry students in one class were among the topics discussed. (JN)

Ragsdale, Ronald O.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1978
Describes the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB) Advanced Placement Program (AP) which allows secondary level students to pursue college-level studies in high school. (SL)

Cacciatore, Kristen L.; Sevian, Hannah – Journal of Chemical Education, 2006
We present an alternative to a traditional first-year chemistry laboratory experiment. This experiment has four key features: students utilize stoichiometry, learn and apply principles of green chemistry, engage in authentic scientific inquiry, and discover why each part of a scientific lab report is necessary. The importance and essential…

Modu, Christopher C.; Taft, Hessy L. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1982
Compares performance of first-year general chemistry college students from 32 institutions with performance of Advanced Placement (AP) Chemistry Candidates in 1978 to provide a concurrent validity measure of the multiple-choice section of the AP chemistry examination. Average AP candidates scored significantly higher than average college students.…

Liebermann, John, Jr.; Yun, Ki J. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1988
Examines a solubility laboratory experiment using silver acetate and spectrophotometers for an Advanced Placement chemistry course. Covers experimental procedure, analysis of saturated solutions, and a discussion of chemistry involved. Includes an absorbance curve for silver ions and solution preparation suggestions. (ML)
