Coelho, Richard J. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1985
Examined the psychometric properties of the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control (MHLC) Scales with chronic cigarette smokers (N=146). Results showed that health locus of control orientation was bidimensional, with domains defined by the Internal and Powerful Others measures. (Author/JAC)

McCreary, Charles; Turner, Judith – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Examined the relationship between locus of control and psychological disorder in chronic pain patients (N=59) through administration of Rotter's Internal-External Locus of Control Scale and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. Results suggested that both anxiety and a response set affect this population's rating of ability to control…

Ludenia, Krista; Donham, Greg W. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1983
Examined relationships among specific personality variables, the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scales, and criterion-based ratings by staff dentists with dental outpatients (N=101). Found a consistent relationship between the perception that health is maintained by engaging in health-related behaviors and individual difference measures…

Kappes, Bruno M.; Thompson, Dan L. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1985
Juvenile residents (N=12) were assigned to biofeedback or video game conditions to examine their effects on self-regulation skills. Results indicated no significant differences between biofeedback and video game training. However, pre- and post-differences for both groups combined demonstrated significant gains in self-regulation. (Author/BL)

Vargo, Marc E.; Black, F. William – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Administered the Rotter Internal-External Locus of Control Scale and the Templer Death Anxiety Scale to 50 medical students. Results showed the internally oriented group obtained a significantly lower score on the Death Anxiety Scale, suggesting that internally oriented students are better equipped to confront illness and death. (JAC)

Ludenia, Krista; Russell, Stephen F. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1983
Examined relationships between the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control (MHLC) Scales and subscales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) with inpatients (N=90) at a alcohol treatment unit. Significant correlations were found between dimensions of perceived locus of control and various personality characteristics. (JAC)

Umlauf, Robert L.; Frank, Robert G. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1986
Replicated a recent report of the factorial structure of the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale, using rehabilitation patients. Analyses failed to validate the previously reported three-dimensional structure, which indicates a need for careful interpretation of this scale when used with certain populations. An alternative factor…

Kohutek, Kenneth J. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1983
Evaluated the psychotherapeutic adjunct of bibliotherapy in a maximum security correctional setting with 54 volunteers from a general and segregated population. Results indicated that bibliotherapy may have a facilitative effect on self-concept and internal locus of control but cannot be differentiated from the effects of therapist intervention.…

Reed, Michael; Saslow, Carol – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1980
Brief relaxation instruction alone and instructions plus electromyographic (EMG) feedback produced significant decreases in general and test-specific anxiety. EMG feedback added little to the effectiveness of relaxation instructions and practice. Relaxation instruction without EMG biofeedback shifted subjects toward a more internal locus of…

Tracey, Terence J.; Miars, Russell D. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1986
Compared the two definitions used to study therapist interpersonal control: The relational coding scheme of Ericson and Rogers and the topic initiation/topic following schema of Tracey and Ray as they apply to actual therapy dyads. Both schemata were moderately correlated, but the two models attributed control to different participants.…

Grace, Pamela S.; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1985
Compared purging bulimics (N=26), non-purging bulimics (N=24), and controls with no apparent eating problems, on personality and demographic variables. Results linked bulimics with low self-esteem, high anxiety, external locus of control, and high incidence of maternal and family obesity. No significant differences were found between purgers and…

Fleming, James S.; Spooner, P. Scott – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1985
Factor analyzed combined items from Rotter's Internal-External Scale and Levenson's Multidimensional Internal External Locus of Control scales revealing factors similar to Difficult World, Just World, Predictable World, and Politically Responsive World, and additional factor, Friendly World. Most factors were correlated with masculinity; only…

Swink, David F.; Buchanan, Dale Richard – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Studied the effectiveness of sociodramatic goal-oriented role play and non-goal-oriented role play on locus of control in Black fifth-grade students (N=53). Results showed that internal locus of control significantly increased for the students who participated in the sociodramatic goal-oriented role play. (LLL)

Mizes, J. Scott – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Assessed the motivational effects of criterion-setting in self-reinforcement and compared the effects of external criteria with self-imposed criteria and self-presented rewards in undergraduates (N=180). Results indicated that criterion-setting and rewards are both important components of self-reinforcement procedures; and self-imposed criteria…

Ward, L. Charles; Thomas, Linda L. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1985
Administered items from three locus of control (LOC) tests and the Beck Hopelessness Scale to 197 undergraduates. Factor analyses produced multiple factors for each LOC test; Beck proved to be unidimensional. Each LOC test contained salient dimension describing belief in luck, chance, or fate. Other common themes were internal control and…
