Among obese females following a behavioral weight loss program, a measure of perceived personal control significantly predicted outcome. Internals achieved greater mean weight loss. The internal control orientation was associated with higher extraversion and self-acceptance, but neither of these other variables correlated with weight loss. (Author)

The purposes of this study were to test the validity of the item-pair dipolarity assumption, to change the format to avoid bipolar item pairing should the assumption prove untenable, establish a more definitive factor structure and explore its validity by relating it to other personality variables. The Purpose in Life (PIL) measures more than absence of depression and internalized perceived locus of psychological reinforcement. Depressed external individuals are more identifiable from their existential malaise or emptyness. The experience of reinforcement for being in the world is beyond their control. (Author)
