Coticone, Sulekha Rao; Van Houten, Lora Bailey – Journal of College Science Teaching, 2015
A special topics course combining two relevant and contemporary themes (forensic DNA analysis and illicit drug detection) was developed to stimulate student enthusiasm and enhance understanding of forensic science. Building on the interest of popular television shows such as "CSI" and "Breaking Bad," this course connects…

Kitazono, Ana A. – Journal of College Science Teaching, 2010
A journal-club-based class has been developed to promote active and cooperative learning and expose seniors in biochemistry and cellular molecular biology to recent research in the field. Besides giving oral presentations, students also write three papers: one discussing an article of their own choosing and two, discussing articles presented by…

Regassa, Laura B.; Morrison-Shetlar, Alison I. – Journal of College Science Teaching, 2007
Inquiry-based learning was used to enhance an undergraduate molecular biology course at Georgia Southern University, a primarily undergraduate institution in rural southeast Georgia. The goal was to use a long-term, in-class project to accelerate higher-order thinking, thereby enabling students to problem solve and apply their knowledge to novel…

Crouch, R. David – Journal of College Science Teaching, 2006
Chemistry is a good entry to many topics in nanotechnology. This paper describes a non-science majors' course in which chemical concepts provide the background to the study of this new field. (Contains 2 tables and 1 figure.)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Students, Nonmajors, Scientific Concepts

Morvillo, Nancy; Schmidt, Matthew; Carlson, Albert – Journal of College Science Teaching, 2000
Describes a microbiology exercise that is designed to expose students to the world wide web. Introduces a molecular biology quiz site and National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). Provides a list of molecular biology sites on the Internet. (YDS)

McCallister, Gary – Journal of College Science Teaching, 2005
The DNA triplet code also functions as a binary code. Because double-ring compounds cannot bind to double-ring compounds in the DNA code, the sequence of bases classified simply as purines or pyrimidines can encode for smaller groups of possible amino acids. This is an intuitive approach to teaching the DNA code. (Contains 6 figures.)

Henderson, LaRhee; Buising, Charisse – Journal of College Science Teaching, 2001
Describes a course that mimics experiences in research laboratories, engages students in collaboration, and reflects trends in educational reform. (YDS)
