Newton, Genevieve; Martin, Elizabeth – Journal of College Science Teaching, 2013
Three alternative approaches to assessment of exam responses were applied in an undergraduate biochemistry course. First, phenomenography was used to categorize written exam responses into an inclusive hierarchy. Second, responses to the same question were similarly categorized according to the Structure of Observed Learning Outcome (SOLO)…

Ziegler, Brittany; Montplaisir, Lisa – Journal of College Science Teaching, 2012
The use of assessment methods is a widely discussed topic in education. Exams that are commonly used, however, may not necessarily assess student understanding at a high cognitive level. By implementing alternative assessment methods, instructors can influence student learning. Portfolio-based assessment (PBA) is a purposeful collection of student…

Lunsford, Eddie; Melear, Claudia T. – Journal of College Science Teaching, 2004
This article explores the problem of assigning grades to students engaged in nontraditional activities, especially scientific inquiry. We suggest using scoring rubrics to guide students in their work and to assist teachers with grading. We present the steps involved in the construction of rubrics, and we show sample rubrics. (Contains 5 figures.)
