Evaluated the role of prior academic performance and nonacademic attributes in the prediction of success of high-risk college students (n=173). Found personal characteristics such as fearing failure, associating success with facility, and experiencing examination anxiety were more reliable predictors than was academic potential. To identify college students at risk for dropping out, scores on the Environmental Deprivation Scale (EDS) given six quarters earlier were studied. Students who had graduated at follow-up had lower scores than those who had dropped out. Examination of items showed types of support lacking for at-risk students. (EMK)
