Measuring Perceived Influences of Immigration Rules on Career Exploration among International Students
Song, Kirsten Younghee; Kim, HaeJung
Journal of College Student Development, v63 n5 p572-587 Sep-Oct 2022
We developed a 6-item scale (PIIRCES) measuring the perceived influence of immigration rules on career explorations among international students. For exploratory purposes, we tested it with an online survey administration (N = 307). Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis suggested the scale has fairly good validity. Overall, the respondents reported the immigration rules had a high level of influence on their career exploration. Older respondents at the time of the study perceived more influence and as did those who were older at the time of migration to the US. The PIIRCES contributes to the existing literature on international students' career-related concerns, which has primarily focused on individual variables like acculturation or discrimination experiences. By adding an institutional variable to the analysis, the PIIRCES helps scholars and practitioners better understand international students' transition to work with a more comprehensive approach.
