Reflections on "The Creation of Settings and the Future Societies": The Roses and Thorns
Langhout, Regina
Journal of Community Psychology, v40 n2 p215-218 Mar 2012
The author has been asked to discuss the relevance, or lack of relevance, for "The Creation of Settings and the Future Societies" (Sarason, 1972) for community psychology today. She appreciates this assignment, as one of the first books she read in graduate school was "The Creation of Settings and the Future Societies." After that, she was exposed to several of Seymour's articles and ideas. She met him around 2003 and saw him last in 2006, when she left Wesleyan University for UC Santa Cruz. They used to talk, over lunch, about the collaborative research relationships that she was developing with an elementary school, especially given the history of Wesleyan as an institution, and he would give her homework assignments after many of their meetings. In this article, the author first discusses ideas that she has found to be the most helpful, or the roses, in the book. She then moves onto the thorns, or what constitutes the thorny issues for her, and also for her students--both at UC Santa Cruz and at Wesleyan. She concludes that the book has many generative ideas, and the tensions can lead to fascinating and important discussions.
